About Enea Leone

Enea Leone, born in Milan, began studying the guitar at a very young age under the guidance of his father. He later continued his studies with Lena Kokkaliari before being admitted to the Conservatorio “G. Verdi” of Milan, where he studied under Ruggero Chiesa and Paolo Chierici, graduating with top honours in 1998. He went on to complete a two-year postgraduate course with the highest marks and further refined his training with Emanuele Segre, Alirio Díaz, and Oscar Ghiglia. From 2002 to 2004, he was awarded scholarships and certificates at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, and in 2005, he obtained the prestigious “Solistendiplom” from the Musik-Akademie of Basel, once again under the guidance of Oscar Ghiglia.

Since 1990, Leone has distinguished himself as a soloist in major national and international competitions such as Stresa, Franz Schubert, Mondovì, Lodi, Gargnano, Pittaluga, and notably won the International Tournament of Music (TIM) in 2002. His concert career includes appearances across Italy—at events including “Pomeriggi Musicali,” “Associazione Amici del Conservatorio G. Verdi,” and “Amici del Loggione del Teatro alla Scala”—as well as international performances in Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, Romania, and Greece. He has appeared both as a soloist and in chamber ensembles or orchestra, including performing Concierto de Aranjuez with the Cantelli Orchestra of Milan.

Since 2000, he has collaborated with the Harmonia School of Music in Gessate (MI) as Artistic Director and Professor of the annual Masterclass. He has led numerous masterclasses at festivals and events such as “La magia del borgo, chitarra e altro…” in Brisighella (since 2006), the Mondovì Competition in Roburent (since 2007), “Suoni del Legno” in the City of Todi (since 2008), and “Badesi in Musica” in Sardinia (since 2011). He currently holds the position of Professor of Guitar at the Conservatorio “Luca Marenzio” in Brescia–Darfo Boario Terme.

In 2003, he recorded a CD for M.A.P. dedicated entirely to the music of Astor Piazzolla, featuring both solo and chamber music. In 2007, he released Eleven, a recording distributed by Nicolosi Production (a label associated with artists such as Sting, Frank Gambale, and Billy Cobham), featuring music by Ennio Morricone transcribed for solo guitar by Carlo Marchione. Several pieces from Eleven were later included in a Morricone anthology published by Carish.

In 2011, Leone released Souvenir, a CD entirely dedicated to romantic repertoire by Coste and Regondi, including two world premieres. The album received exceptional critical acclaim:
• “In Souvenir, Enea Leone is up there with those artists and works which, from the musical and strictly executional point of view, would make anyone shudder… showing excellent interpretative skills and impeccable technique.” – Amadeus (5 stars)
• “Leone demonstrates his ability to catch the listener’s attention from the first bars… his ductile, soft, and round sound reflects an absorbed, almost dreamy presence… he proves his impeccability from any point of view.” – Musica (5 stars)
• “His technique enables him to achieve speed and precise articulation… his virtuosity supports phrasing, suspended notes, melodic continuity, and clear modulation.” – Il Fronimo
• “Interpretations marked by a wide timbral palette and dynamic control… a recording delivered with zeal and devotion…” – Seicorde (CD of the Month, 5 stars)
• “Souvenir includes familiar pieces like Reverie and Introduzione e Capriccio, but rarely performed with such insight and virtuosity.” – Diverdi (Spain)
• “The passion of the excellent Enea Leone makes every performance of Coste and Regondi deeply engaging.” – Gendai Guitar (Japan)

Oscar Ghiglia, Leone’s former mentor, has described him as “a very talented guitarist and teacher: gifted with unlimited technical competence and exceptional stage presence, he is able to transmit his passion and knowledge to his students in the most efficient way.”

Enea Leone plays guitars by Rinaldo Vacca. He is an official ambassador for Alba GB products and close collaborator to the team.

Praise and Reviews from Across the World

Enea Leone has earned praise not only for his technical command but for his ability to draw out deep musical expression in both historical and modern works. Reviewers and critics regularly highlight the balance between structure and emotion in his playing.

Classical Guitar Magazine described his interpretation of Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Caprichos de Goya as “thoughtful and masterfully restrained… bringing a painterly finesse to each note.” A review in Gendai Guitar Japan referred to his tone as “hauntingly beautiful – Leone doesn’t merely play; he speaks through the instrument.”

On YouTube, his performances of Giuliani and Legnani regularly attract thousands of views and enthusiastic comments from guitarists and listeners worldwide. His 2023 concert at the Festival Internacional de Guitarra Clásica in Madrid was described by El Diario de la Guitarra as “a highlight of the programme – Leone’s command of colour and dynamics is unforgettable.”

Bloggers and reviewers in both Italy and abroad note the intellectual clarity of his phrasing and his commitment to communicating the architecture of each piece without sacrificing emotional depth. His recorded albums are frequently used by music students and teachers as reference interpretations, especially his renditions of the works of Sor and Giuliani.

Programme for the Evening – Glasgow, 4 December 2025

The evening’s programme is a journey through some of the most evocative and technically rich works in the classical guitar repertoire. Curated specifically for this concert in Glasgow, it highlights Leone’s deep connection to the European tradition and his ability to move between centuries with elegance and conviction.

Part I: Italian Classical Guitar Repertoire

Fernando Sor – Introduzione, tema e variazioni op. 9

Sor’s elegant theme and variations demonstrate the refined structures of the early Romantic guitar repertoire. Leone approaches the piece with clarity and grace, highlighting the contrasts between lyrical simplicity and technical brilliance.

Niccolò Paganini – Four Pieces

In cor più non mi sento

Sonata No. 34

Larghetto

Sonata No. 35

Known for his violin works, Paganini was also a devoted guitarist. These four short pieces reflect his operatic sensibility and flair for ornamentation. Leone’s delivery captures the subtle theatricality and shifting moods with charm and agility.

Part II: Spanish Landscapes and Guitar Transcriptions

Isaac Albéniz – Mallorca / Capricho Catalán / Asturias

(Arrangements by Enea Leone and Carlo Marchione)

These celebrated piano works by Albéniz find new life on the guitar. In Leone’s hands, Mallorca reveals a quiet melancholy, Capricho Catalán flows with Catalonian lyricism, and Asturias, performed in the original key, is rendered with striking energy and rhythmic force. The transcriptions strike a balance between faithfulness and idiomatic guitar writing.

Part III: The Legacy of Francisco Tárrega

Tárrega – Capricho Árabe / Endecha / Prelude in D / Oremus / Lágrima / Recuerdos de la Alhambra

These short pieces span Tárrega’s introspective lyricism and technical sophistication. Leone presents them as a continuous meditation on memory and nostalgia, culminating in Recuerdos de la Alhambra—a tremolo study that, in Leone’s interpretation, becomes a timeless evocation of the Alhambra’s faded splendour.

Part IV: Cinema and Memory – Music by Ennio Morricone

Morricone – C’era una volta il West / The Mission / Nuovo Cinema Paradiso / Il Buono, il Brutto e il Cattivo

(Arrangements by Carlo Marchione and Enea Leone)

These themes from Morricone’s most iconic films are reimagined for solo guitar with rare sensitivity. The emotional weight of The Mission and Nuovo Cinema Paradiso is balanced by the dramatic tension of Il Buono, il Brutto e il Cattivo. Leone’s performances avoid sentimentality, instead offering clear, finely drawn phrasing that lets the music speak for itself.

Part V: Tango and Farewell

Astor Piazzolla – Adiós Nonino / Libertango

(Transcriptions by Enea Leone)

Closing the evening, Leone turns to the tango nuevo of Piazzolla. Adiós Nonino is delivered with emotional restraint, allowing the melancholy to emerge naturally. Libertango, by contrast, is performed with bold, rhythmic articulation—bringing the journey to a compelling close.

Encore: Announced Live

Leone often selects encores on the night, in response to the audience and the atmosphere of the hall. Expect a personal gesture—perhaps something intimate, unexpected, or rooted in the Italian repertoire.
