About the composer

Isaac Albéniz

Isaac Albéniz (1860–1909) was a Spanish composer and virtuoso pianist who played an important role in the development of a distinctive Spanish national style in concert music. Born on 29 May 1860 in Camprodon, Catalonia, he showed exceptional musical ability from an early age and made his first public appearance as a pianist as a child. He later studied in Madrid, Leipzig and Brussels and developed an international career as both a pianist and composer. Albéniz became particularly known for incorporating Spanish rhythmic, melodic and harmonic characteristics into sophisticated concert music. Many of his works evoke particular regions, cities, landscapes and musical traditions of Spain, especially those associated with Andalusia. His mature music combines these Spanish elements with increasingly refined harmony, rhythm and pianistic writing. He died in Cambo-les-Bains, France, on 18 May 1909, shortly before his forty-ninth birthday.
