À propos du compositeur
Rossen Balkanski
Associate Professor Dr Rossen Balkanski is a distinguished Bulgarian guitarist, composer and pedagogue. Born in Sofia in 1968, he began studying the guitar at the age of eleven under two of the leading figures of the Bulgarian guitar tradition, Dimitar Doychinov and Stefan Vladimirov. He graduated in classical guitar from the National Music School “Lyubomir Pipkov” and later from the National Music Academy “Prof. Pancho Vladiguerov” in Sofia. Immediately after completing his studies, he was invited to join the Faculty of Instrumental Music, where he became its sole professor of classical guitar. Rossen Balkanski has received numerous national and international awards for both performance and composition, and he is a laureate of every national guitar competition in Bulgaria. In 1982, at Kutná Hora in Czechoslovakia, he became the first Bulgarian guitarist to win an international prize. He later received an award for his composition Three Miniatures for Guitar in a competition organised by the Academy of Music, Dance and Fine Arts in Plovdiv, and the work was published in the French journal Cahier de la Guitare in 1996. Associate Professor Dr Balkanski is a member of the Union of Bulgarian Composers and is widely recognised for his work for solo guitar, chamber ensembles, film and theatre. His guitar compositions have been performed across Europe and America by leading classical guitarists including Gerhard Reichenbach, Andreas von Wangenheim, Dmitry Illarionov and Atanas Ourkouzounov. A CD devoted entirely to his music was recorded by the celebrated guitarist Gerhard Reichenbach and released by Gega Music. His chamber works have also been performed by distinguished musicians and ensembles such as Yosif Radionov, Angel Stankov, the guitar duo Milena and Valentin Valchev, Quartet “Colors” in Germany, and the guitar trio Triada in the United States. Rossen Balkanski is also among the very few Bulgarian composers for mandolin ensemble to have achieved international recognition. In addition to performances by the Bulgarian mandolin quartet “Seasons”, his works have been commissioned by ensembles and organisations including Landeszupforchester Thüringen in Germany, Landeszupforchester Nord for the Eurofestival Zupfmusik in Bruchsal, and the Visani Festival in Greece. Premieres of his works for mandolin formations have taken place in Bulgaria, Croatia, Spain, Germany, Greece, Japan and China. In 2011, in recognition of his standing as a composer for mandolin, Associate Professor Dr Balkanski was invited by the Department of Mandolin and Guitar in Wuppertal at the University of Music and Dance in Cologne to give a masterclass and present his work for guitar and mandolin, concluding with a gala concert performed by university students together with a mandolin orchestra from Essen. Two years later, he was invited as a special guest of the mandolin orchestra Landeszupforchester Thüringen, with whom he engaged in a fruitful artistic exchange that led to the commission of an original work. His compositions are published by several European publishers, including BIM in Switzerland, Daminus in Germany, Haus der Musik Trekel OHG in Germany, as well as BalkaNota and Dobrev in Bulgaria. Alongside his work as a composer, Rossen Balkanski has maintained an active concert career as a soloist, has appeared in a range of chamber ensembles, and has performed with the Sofia Philharmonic, the Bulgarian National Radio Orchestra, the Sliven Philharmonic, the Symphony Orchestra, and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. He regularly gives masterclasses in classical guitar both in Bulgaria and abroad, and frequently serves as a juror in prestigious classical music competitions.
