Continuing from our earlier exchange, we sat down once more with Massimo and Gabriele, the passionate minds behind Roma Expo Guitars, to uncover more about the roots, recognition, and rhythms of one of Italy's most prestigious guitar events.

Alba GB:
Reflecting on the very beginning, how hard was it to start the expo? Any funny memories you’d like to share?
Massimo & Gabriele:
Starting REG was a leap of faith. We had a deep belief in the quality of Italian luthiery and wanted to create a space that reflected that. But pulling together the first edition meant sleepless nights, phone calls that never ended, and a lot of favours!
One of our funniest early stories? In our first year, we underestimated how many attendees would turn up. We ran out of chairs within the first hour. A few luthiers ended up sitting on their guitar cases, thankfully, not with the guitars inside!
It was chaotic, but it showed us how much love and interest there already was for this craft.

Alba GB:
Italy has so many wonderful events for guitar lovers. Yet REG stands out. What’s your secret sauce? And how do you select the musicians who come to perform?
Massimo & Gabriele:
Thank you! That means a lot. We think REG feels special because we’re very intentional. Every luthier, every artist who plays here, is chosen not just for skill but for spirit. We look for players who understand the instruments they’re playing, who bring out the personality of the guitar.
Often, we collaborate with top conservatories and have close ties with teachers across Italy. And we give space to young rising talents, they are the future, and they deserve the best stages and instruments.
Alba GB:
Last year, I missed the event you hosted with the mayor of Rome, but clearly, REG is making waves beyond the guitar world. Adriano del Sal, one of my good friends, played there with a guitar by another good friend of ours, Leonardo de Gregorio. How do you feel about this recognition from local authorities?

Massimo & Gabriele:
It’s been a surprise, honestly. We never set out to become an official cultural event. But over the years, the consistency, the quality, and the atmosphere we create have caught the attention of city leaders. The Mayor’s invitation was a moment of pride.
It reminded us that classical guitar isn’t just for a niche audience; it’s part of our artistic identity as Italians. Rome, with all its cultural depth, is the perfect place for something like REG to flourish

Alba GB:
We’ve spoken about the history, the artists, and the organization, but now we want to ask about the experience. Roma Expo Guitars has such a distinct atmosphere. What do you think makes the vibe of the expo so special?
Massimo:
It’s the people. Really. The best part about Roma Expo is the community that comes together every year. You have master luthiers chatting with students, professional players testing instruments next to amateurs, and families visiting just out of curiosity. It’s warm, informal, but at the same time, very serious about the guitar. There’s a shared love that is very difficult to replicate elsewhere.
Gabriele:
Also, the setting helps! Rome has this magic, you walk out of the venue and you’re in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. You can grab a coffee, have a chat with a luthier in the piazza, and next thing you know, you’re planning a collaboration. There’s a balance of professionalism and enjoyment. It’s not a trade fair in the usual sense; it’s a celebration of craftsmanship and music.

Alba GB:
Yes, and we’re proud to be among those international visitors, too! Now that we’ve talked so much about the past and present, what are your hopes for the future of Roma Expo Guitars?
Massimo:
We want to keep improving without losing the intimacy of the event. It’s very easy to grow and lose the soul of what you started. We are careful to stay true to our identity: a space for the very best of Italian lutherie and a meeting point for musicians who care deeply about the guitar.
Gabriele:
And we want to involve younger generations more actively. Luthiery in Italy has deep roots, but it also has a future. We’re exploring ways to include workshops, masterclasses, and mentorship programs in the coming editions. That way, knowledge and passion are passed down in the most organic way.

Alba GB:
That sounds absolutely fantastic and necessary. So, finally, if someone has never been to Roma Expo Guitars before, what would you say to convince them to come?
Massimo:
If you love the guitar, this is your place. Whether you’re a builder, a player, or just someone who enjoys music and craftsmanship, you’ll find something inspiring. You’ll learn, you’ll meet incredible people, and maybe you’ll find your next guitar or your next friend.
Gabriele:
Exactly. We’re not just offering guitars. We’re offering stories, passion, and community. And of course, a few unforgettable espressos along the way.
Alba GB:
We couldn’t agree more. Thank you both so much for sharing your time and your passion with us. We’re looking forward to the next Roma Expo and to many more conversations like this!
Massimo & Gabriele: Thank you, Alba GB. See you in Rome!
Alba GB: Avoja !!
